Program Notes

I received a call one March afternoon, and it was a call from Wesley Whatley in New York City. Wesley said he was with the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and he was told by Dr. Rick Good that he picked me to write the music for this years Macy’s Great American Marching Band. I IMMEDIATELY thought that it was a joke, but when I called Dr. Good, he was serious! He asked for a piece in dedication of the 85th anniversary of the Macy’s Parade, and that it would have to be a fanfare to be featured at the start of the parade. As fast as I could, I began writing. I had to imagine myself as someone watching the parade on TV, or watching in the streets, and also had to imagine a piece that would get me excited, and eager to see the parade! Noticing a constant factor in the creative process, I felt IMAGINE FANFARE was a fitting title, and felt the piece reflected a sense of imagination.

The piece was written specifically for parade purposes, so the timing and tempo makes the piece exactly one minute and fifteen seconds. This makes the piece PERFECT for a parade performance, or a great fanfare for a half-time show.

World premier was on November 24, 2011 in New York City in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade by the Macy’s Great American Marching Band. Rick Good, Director of MGAMB. Wesley Whatley, Macy’s Creative Director.
