Program Notes

Written in March of 2011, this 3-minute fanfare takes a simplistic idea and turns it into a colorful, vibrant work of art. This idea popped in my head during a visit with my good friend and mentor Erik Morales, who was conducting at an honor band locally. Snow threatened the travels of both Erik and I, and we were happy to be able to get together.

I had already self-published two or three saxophone tunes, and felt that writing a trumpet piece would be cool... And the result was “Fanfare of the Prisms”. The work can only be described as one word, a fanfare! Built off of a little bit of material, the piece is suggestive of a prism, witch exposed to sunlight, creates beautiful colors and yet is made by one beam of light. This is the picture that really inspired the music.
