Program Notes
Recently, I attended The Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Illinois. I was standing at the FJH Music Company booth, and in walks, today one of my good friends, Willie Owens! I had performed MANY of his pieces, like “Three Scottish Vistas”, “Carpathia”, Air Force One”. He walks in, and I approached him and said “Hello Mr. Owens, I am Tyler S. Grant! I’m a big fan of your music!” He says “Hi Tyler, What instrument you play?” I replied, “Euphonium, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, Piano, Percussion.” He says “Thats good, but you need to learn some woodwinds!” I said “I was always told to stick with brass.” Before I finish speaking, he grabs me by the shoulders and says “Tyler, LEARN some woodwinds!” We talked about clarinet, he even offered a free clarinet lesson! I unfortunately had to leave for home early, so I never got a lesson. But after Midwest, I realized, that was THE best advise I got throughout the entire conference. I began looking at woodwinds, and soon after, I looked at writing woodwinds like I never had before! I wrote the first movement to Static in April of 2010 as an experimental project for saxophones. The idea sort of ballooned out and completely took me by surprise when I reflected on the piece.
