PROGRAM NOTES

Hummingbirds are truly incredible creatures. With hearts that race up to 21 beats per second, they can also fly up to 30 miles per hour. Among their many fascinating traits, they are also one of the most communicative species with a variety of methods for conversing efficiently, yet with great intention and care. In writing a piece that depicted the magical whimsy of these fascinating creatures, it is my hope that a celebration of “communication” is the central takeaway for listeners and performers.

The work begins with a simple flute solo representing the first hummingbird emerging to start a new day. As the melody repeats, more voices interject as the other birds emerge from their nests and take flight. After a brief fanfare, all of the themes begin to weave themselves together as each hummingbird shares its unique message and personality, while also in harmony with everyone around them. Through several twists and turns, the music arrives at a climax that brings all the themes together in a musical celebration of color and joy. The piece ends with the hummingbirds retreating to their nests in a quiet, yet fulfilling, end to their day.

Wings of Wonder was commissioned by the Gautier Middle School Bands (MS) under the direction of Louise Smith. Louise would like to personally dedicate this work to her fellow members of the CCSSO 2024 State Teachers of the Year.
