PROGRAM NOTES

At some point in our lives, we’ve all encountered the phrase, “life is about the journey, not the destination.” Some of us have heard this from a coach or teacher; others from a book or an inspirational message. Some may have heard this from a parent or grandparent, while some may have learned this from personal experience.

Commissioned to honor the 10th anniversary of Mills Park Middle School (NC), One Common Journey is a musical celebration of our past, present, and future experiences. Specifically, it celebrates the community and camaraderie we have within our schools. From the friends we pass in the hall to the teachers that invest in us everyday, this work seeks to capture the “spark” in our schools that makes it our own. Upon reflection, we can see how the impact of those around us shaped our growth, and furthermore, how the strength and power of the community is greater than the sum of the individuals. As we revisit our personal journey and contemplate the path ahead, it’s my hope this piece will encourage you remember those who have shared a piece of that journey with you.
