PROGRAM NOTES

Piedmont Sky was written in the summer of 2020 and was the first piece Atlanta-resident Tyler S. Grant wrote after the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Grant writes,

“If I ever felt overwhelmed by the gravity of the pandemic and the anxiety of living in isolation, I would go for walks. I found discovering parks, nature trails, and city sidewalks to be incredibly therapeutic in my effort to cope with all the uncertainty. One of the places I found to be perfect for this socially-distant exercise was Piedmont Park. The piece is based on a picture I took of the radiantly-beautiful sunset on that summer-evening. It was one of the first times that I felt undistracted and reconnected to the bigger picture of life.”

Piedmont Sky was commissioned by Dr. Tyler Austin and the Maryland Chamber Wind for the 2020 MCW Digital Premiere Project.
